Arm in Arm
a collection of connections
endless tales
reiterations
and other echolalia
by Remy Charlip
…..
An absurd, beautiful, free-form, and frequently psychedelic children’s book I found at a thrift store the other day. Remy Charlip is a very interesting and talented jack-of-all-trades: a teacher, theater director, choreographer, costume and set designer, the head of the Children’s Literature and Theater department at Sarah Lawrence College, and founder of the New York Children’s Theater (to name a few). I took some photos of the crazy layouts in this book but none of them turned out that great, so here are some cover and detail shots.

You may remember my post about Makelike’s Cactus collection (which is still my favorite). Well I just noticed that they have a forest collection as well which documents flora of the forest, including weird and wonderful fungi. Love these dishtowels! Even more here including some lovely wallpaper.

I love these fantastical scientific illustrations by Katie Scott; they are interpretations of the concept of biological hybridization in antiquity. Look nicethat.com/articles/student-of-the-month-katie-scott” target=”_blank”>here for an interview with the artist (who is a 3rd year student, by the way)!

Some really cool ceramic jewelry by Goldenink. It’s weird, I’m not usually a huge fan of ceramic jewelry, but a few lines like this one and now this one (both out of Australia, coincidence?) have started to change my mind.

Scout Holiday posted this video made by Nordin for Whyred, and I loved it. The rest of her work is equally as impressive. I find it incredibly beautiful and simple.

These beautiful educational blocks for children were designed for “Art in America” magazine by Milton Glaser. According to him “they sold poorly”.

I found this little book of (often insipid) quotations a long time ago and the only thing that the former owner had underlined was this quote:
We can’t choose happiness. We can only choose whether we will indulge ourselves in the present moment or whether we will renounce that for the sake of obeying the divine voice within us- for the sake of being true to all the motives that sanctify our lives. I know this belief is hard but I have felt that if I let it go forever, I should have no light through the darkness of this life.

Umm… guess what I’m going to be looking for at EVERY thrift store?
Check out this rad Flickr set devoted to this book.

It’s been such a long time since I looked at Ellie’s work. There are many new pieces up on her site. I’m especially obsessed with the fabric and wallpaper prints she’s been making- whimsical, beautiful, and sometimes flirting with the grotesque. Her shop is fairly empty right now, but perhaps it’s soon to be filled.
