Tiny blossoms

Spring is here! Many of my succulents are blooming.  The cornflower is from outside of my local post office (yes I’m a flower thief), but the little lavender stems with the tiny flowers are from some Sedums in my garden.  Ignore the cottage cheese texture on my wall in the second picture.

*In other news, I put a ton of vintage shoes in the shop, so check them out!

Vintage Find: “Aunt Jo’s Scrap Bag, vol. 5” by Louisa May Alcott 1891

One of several vintage first editions I picked up yesterday at a local thrift store for a ridiculously low price.  Louisa May Alcott is one of my favourite authors (I’m sentimental that way), and so I was very excited to find this gem.  It’s from the original run produced in 1891.  If only I had been able to get all six volumes in this series… now I’m getting greedy.

And look what I found inside….!

Labels

How sexy is this packaging that I came across today at the supermarket?

Japanese Crabapple trees

These are a couple of photos I took forever ago with a Polaroid Land Camera and some vintage film on an outing to Descanso Gardens.  These photos got so thrashed from being up on my fridge for a few years (she said shamefully), but I still really like them.  I ended up parting with the camera because it was too expensive to put film in plus, the damn thing was impossible to focus and adjust.  But I did get a few interesting photos out of it.

Marisa Tomei for Boy by Band of Outsiders

Yes, Marisa Tomei is still adorable.  Scott Sternberg continues with his tradition of shooting various folks (some very famous, some more obscure) for his Boy by Band of Outsiders lookbooks- this time with Marisa Tomei at local hipster favourite, Chateau Marmont.  The last shoot was of Sarah Silverman at Canter’s Deli, which is pretty darn good too.

Art in my neighbourhood

So sometime last month, my husband and I were driving down our street and we saw two guys painting over this graffiti’d truck.  We could tell the murals were going to be good.  It was there today, finished and looking even better than I thought.

On all 3 sides!  I just had to take some snapshots before some cretin graffiti’d on it again.

CSA Veg Box

I love the CSA (Community Shared Agriculture) movement in LA.   Californians are a little late to the game, as I know places in other parts of the world have been doing this for some time, but they are springing up all over the place now.  Local farms contribute different things, so that the boxes are quite varied, and the produce is entirely seasonal.  Our friends Craig and Kenny let us pick up (and eat) their box while they were out of town this weekend.  It was full of peaches, carrots, tomatoes, corn, chilis, potatoes, cabbage, a watermelon, a head of lettuce, and more- and that was just the “small” box!  Crazy.  I am now looking for inventive recipes to use so that I don’t waste any of these farm-fresh goodies.  For you LA locals, this is the co-op that my friends use.  I couldn’t resist taking a photo.

The passionflower I found on a walk,  and the echeveria is blooming in my garden along with several other succulents.

Triumph!

This is my first successful attempt to use a rooting compound.  It’s a species of Pelargonium that I broke off from someone’s yard (think of it less as stealing and more as unwittingly sharing).  It will eventually look like this, a lovely pairing of crimson and grey.  A much less showy Pelargonium than your usual garden-variety scented ones.  I think it will be nice with all my cacti and succulents, as well as my catmint.

I will certainly be using this much more often for further rooting.  It’s a lot of fun.  Super dorky fun.
