Foliage House Plants 1972: Mrs. Ubogy’s Terrarium

August 4th, 2011 | plants, photography, vintage, design

I scanned this from a Time Life book simply called Foliage House Plants.  Confession: I kinda bought this book just so I could scan Mrs. Ubogy and her terrarium, which she clearly loves and dotes on. There’s a tutorial on how to make the terrarium in the photo, but good luck finding a bottle this huge and awesome. Oh also, you will never keep it looking so pristine. Mrs. Ubogy has you beat.

I also just wanted to point out that your mom was making terrariums before you were.  But mainly, I love this photo.

The book is actually pretty good too, by the way.

Too funny. Are terrariums back in style, again? I remember having a small one, probably in college or right out of college!

Believe it or not, I still have this same bottle. All but the philodendron have died. But it is thriving and is about half full. I’m using a stained wooden door knob as a stopper and water it a bit once ever 5 years.. BTW, I look a a bit dfferent these days. If anyone can tell me how to post a photo on this site, I’ll be happy to. As I recall, i was paid $50 for the spread, and when called by the Time Life people many years later, asking for permission to publish this in Canada, I gave consent without thinking to ask for a few bucks. What a dummy. Anyone intereted can contact me directly at ubogy(at)optonline.net

Wow! Thank you for commenting. How neat that you found my post. I really do love this photo of you and I’m sorry you didn’t get paid more for it! I found the book at a thrift store and really did just love that photo. Plus I have a love of plants. I hope you don’t mind that I scanned it and have it up on my blog.
I just received a terrarium, made by a dear friend and I hope to keep it looking as good as the one you made.

I don’t mind at all. Google my name…you’ll find out a few more things about me. BTW, it was my son who found your site. In those days, I cut my own hair…and the necklace, made by a friend, is of welded steel.
